Hairderssers, help!!! How do you cut your own hair?

I had very long hair for about 12 years until yesterday. My husband chopped it off at my ears. I want to somehow make the tips of the hair look normal without going to a salon. I was thinking about layering it myself. I have watched the hair dresser layer my hair time and time again over the years and think I have it all figured out. I am just looking for some guide or instructions or something to give me a few tips or something that I haven't thought of. I can't seem to find anything, though.

Your husband chopped off your hair? Was he assaulting you? Did you call the police? Are you alright?

Addition: Thanks for the extra info. Your original post sounded awful. If you want to blunt the tips, your husband can layer it a bit to soften the look.

Well let help you. All you have to do is use moose or lite hair jell. I would put a little curl to it. then apply the hair jell or moose. I've had this same problem, this works.

Please go to a salon. That way you'll be assured of a good result.

ok well....1st you put your hair in 2 sections from ear to ear then you bring the front section up section by section bye section and cut it to the length of the layer you want....after that you make shur it is even the blend it....for the back you measure the back to the front section by section you may need some help from some one for the back......me i would just go to a salon but try this if you REALLY dont want to

I would recommend going to a salon, but you could try razor cutting the ends a bit to give it a little texture. You can buy a razor comb at any beauty supply place.

I think u should go to a Solon because if u mess it up it takes a long to grow back, please go to a Solon then u know it will be nice and look professional, no matter how many times u have watched your hair dresser do it, it is allot harder than it looks, good luck

I didnt even read your question just because the headline said enough! You dont cut your own hair! Its not possible to give yourself an efficient layered haircut! There are many angles for different layered cuts that you need to bring the hair too, you also need to follow a guideline which you cannot do through the back of the head, how do you plan to cut a blunt line to maintain the length in the back? Haircutting is an art as well as a mathamatical equation that one cannot properly achieve by themselves! No licensed stylist that I ever encountered would attempt to cut their own hair because they know the results would not be even! Have a stylist correct the cut you have before the situation escalades to something more severe and unfixable! You may think you have it figured out so i want to know how you do uniform layers? First you have to start with blunt cut by sectioning the hair into four quadrants, then after the blunt level is maintained you have to take a section down the middle of the back of your head (if your hair is longer than shoulder length you pull it straight out to a 90 degree angle and follow that up to the crown, if its shorter than shoulder length it starts at a 45 degree angle) this is what you need to do just to acheive a guideline... Not gonna happen sweetie! Id love to see someone cut a guideline in the back by pulling the hair straight out at 90 degrees! It takes years to perfect haircutting... Licensed stylist have to be in school between 1-2 and a half years before they are liable to take a stateboard examination that decides whether they capable of stylist title! I've had many balsy clients that thought they knew how it was done and came to me for a fix... and it never is an easy fix! Im not trying to be mean Im trying to convince you the importance of having a stylist take over at this point (you could end up having holes in the cut that can only be fixed by cutting it extremely short or by a lengthy process of growing it out)... Mark me negative as you please youve been warned of the consequences! If your worried about money go to a Cost Cutters or other discounted franchise! Doesnt matter your husband never went to school to be a licensed barber/cosmetologist... Therefor he is winging it and has no clue what he is doing!

My good woman, haven't you quite learnt your lesson yet?! Get yourself to your regular hairdresser at once, make it ABSOLUTELY CRYSTAL CLEAR right off the bat EXACTLY what you want and permit a professional to achieve it for you.You don't have it figured out, because if you did, there would be no need for this posting(!). Please quit while you're ahead, there's no shame in admitting defeat :-).

Good for you that you were able to obtain long hair,so don't wreck all your good work thus far by getting experimental with scissors at this stage of the game(Smile).
