A braid is always a good idea, or you could pull it up into a bun. I'd imagine it'll be less likely to be damaged by the wind that way, and it won't tangle. Or, if some days you're more worried about warmth and comfort than style, wear a hoodie or a jacket with a hood. With your hair down inside the jacket it'll help keep you warm, and the hood can protect your hair on the way to school, then you can just take it off when you get there.

You might try a French Braid, or a fish tail ponytail. Use a deep conditioner once a week to help with the dryness of the winter months.

Moisturize your hair and rap it in a silk scarf so it doesn't get damaged by the weather while you travel. Fix your hair when you get to school.

Btw...there are millions of cute hats that you could get for really cheap. Embrace the idea of creating more than one look for the day...kinda like wardrobe changes!
